SXSW 2012: Breaking Into Transmedia

It's SXSW Panelpicker time, you guys. I know, already. Seems like we just got done cleaning the BBQ sauce out from under our fingernails, right?

My own proposal is Breaking Into Transmedia, and if selected, I'll talk about the lay of the land from a career perspective: Where the money comes from, where it goes, and what you probably need to do to make or get a job doing transmedia work.

There are a ton of proposals out there by smart, gracious, and talented people, but I'm afraid I'm too pressed for time to link 'em up just now, what with ARGfest and other top-sekrit-but-I-swear-I'll-tell-you-soon stuff going on. So if you have panel in, please, please self-link in comments, OK?

Wanderlust

During SXSW, the team over at Six to Start went and launched a fun locative storytelling platform called Wanderlust. It's a clever idea -- it uses the venue type of a place Foursquare instead of a precise location. So the story might ask you to visit a park to read the next bit of story, but it doesn't have to be, say, Central Park -- it can be any park in the world. It's a web application instead of an iPhone/Droid app, so (if I understand correctly) you can use it on any mobile device with a web browser and GPS. And the best part is you can write your own stories for Wanderlust, too!

I've already had the great privilege to write just a tiny story myself, along with creators the likes of Naomi Alderman and Adrian Hon. Mine is Ivy. I'm honestly a bit nervous about it, because it's very much like the kinds of things I write when nobody is looking. If you happen to go through it, do let me know what you think!

On another note, I've been dipping my fingers into a lot of pies lately, and as a result I've been doing a lot of promoting at the expense of meatier content. Alas, time is short. But I now have a glut of stuff to write about, so things around Deus Ex M should be getting a little more interesting again.

In the coming days, I'll be writing more on the Transmedia Artists Guild, the Hazel Project, a post mortem on Ready for the Big Chill, a summary of my transmedia ethics talk at SXSW, annnnnd yes, I'm sorry, a couple more project launches. But hey, I can't keep this pace up forever...

Transmedia Talk, DIY Days, and SXSW

Last week I had the great pleasure of going on the Transmedia Talk podcast a second time, this time discussing my current favorite topic, the ethics of transmedia. It was a fantastic conversation and gave me a little additional material I used for my talk at DIY Days yesterday -- so if you missed me at DIY Days, no worries! You can get substantially the same information through Transmedia Talk, and you won't have to listen to just me as an added bonus.

I'm afraid I don't have the mental space to give DIY Days the writeup it deserves right now, but so far Guy Gonzalez and Chuck Wendig have written up the day, and I'm sure others will be along with their perspectives soon, too.

And -- to segue into even more shameless self-promotion -- I'm talking about hoaxing and transmedia ethics at SXSW on Sunday, March 13. (At 11am! Room 12AB in the convention center! Add me to your schedule now!) The SXSW talk, though, will be easily twice as long and cover a lot more territory. I'm reserving a lot of time for discussion at the end, too, because I'd love to hear your perspectives (and of course your war stories -- you know you want to share them!)

So if you're at SXSW, I'd love it if you could pop by my talk. If you're at SXSW and you can't hit my session, though, at least flag me down on Twitter so we can meet up elsewhere, OK? There will be a transmedia meetup at the Driskill Hotel bar on Friday at 7pm, and a Transmedia Artists Guild meetup on Sunday, also at 7pm, and also at the Driskill.

Now if I can just make it through this tower of deadlines to get there, I'll be all set!

TAG Panel and Meetup at SXSW

Interested in the Transmedia Artist's Guild and what it's all about? At SXSW we're finally stepping into the limelight. Come to the panel on March 13 at 5pm. It's in Salon C at the Hilton. Executive committee members Jay Bushman and Steve Peters will be talking about our goals as a group, and what you can do to help shape our future.

But SXSW isn't complete without a party, right? That's why we'd like to hold an informal transmedia meetup at the bar of the Driskill Hotel where it all began. Come on over with us when the panel is over -- or join us there later, if we can't tear you away from the Old Spice panel.

Let's rock this thing, people.

Transmedia Talk

I was absolutely delighted to be a guest on Transmedia Talk a couple of nights ago, and now the podcast is up! Go listen to the podcast, if you're... you know... into that kind of thing.
