I think what makes it work for me is that there's always something different ahead, always something else to aim at. For a long time I rolled my eyes over Farmville "oh god, another cow? *block application*" but it's turned out to be way more fun than I thought.

The micro transaction model - as it stands - has me still feeling pretty down on Zynga and their ilk.

I'm only playing Treasure Madness as a way to pass time as game builds load at work, even though it also has many of the same skeevy 'offers' on-hand for accruing in-game currency and special items. Thankfully, the gameplay doesn't seem to require this sort of payment to advance - *time* is the biggest currency in the game, really.

Until these companies are held more accountable across the board and players wise up to these shady practices (it's almost like a present-day version of Columbia House music clubs, with their magazine subscription dupes), I find that I have plenty of other casual/mini-game options with which to pass the time.

You make a fair point, Krystyn, and I can admire your stance. It's true Zynga has done some pretty sleazy stuff... but they don't seem to be doing that anymore. Or at least, since I've been playing Farmville, I haven't seen any of those creepy "free Farmville bucks" ads. They aren't whitewashing the icky things they did (actually the CEO has probably been a little too blunt about it for his own good) and they really do seem to be turning over a new leaf.
