Sing it, sister.

I love you Andrea!

If I'm eating 60 calories of soup for lunch, you can bet your last dollar I'm eating at least 250 calories of sandwich with it, and likely an apple, too. Those Campbell marketers are not reaching me.

Plus you're sucking down lots of Bisphenol-A from the can lining. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/magazine-archive/december-2009/food/bpa/overview/bisphenol-a-ov.htm

I'm with you. I hate that ad. My thought when I saw it the first time was "sh*t, I'd have to eat more than 5 cans to get to a normal number of calories for a meal." That's a lot of soup.

I've never understood the point of eating something that doesn't have any calories in it. CALORIES = ENERGY. You might as well just not eat.

Douglas

Haven't checked the cans, but it's highly unlikely there is only one serving in cans that size.

Soup is not just wet vegetables.

Seriously! I saw this commercial a few nights ago and my jaw just hung open in disbelief. Great analysis.

Vixen

Found your blog searching for comment on this horrifying commercial.

Yeah, pretty much what you said.

The tacit message that 80 calories is about the appropriate amount for a meal is really irresponsible.

Erin

Hey, I loved your post so much that I posted it on my twitter feed...and Campbell's responded, accusing me/you of being "extreme"! You can see the exchange here: http://twitter.com/philosophyerin

Andrea

Hey, everybody, thanks for the comments! I didn't realize so many other people felt the same way I did. I'm really glad I wrote this up, even though it's not really game-related.

Erin, that's really funny about Campbell's Tweeting at you. Especially because they hasn't said a single word to me about it. ^_^

Alex Kuen

this is fantastic. I was planning on blogging about it myself, and am so glad that someone else feels the same. I got SO angry when I saw this commercial on TV the other night. And I'm even more angry now that I've seen Campbell's twitter responses. I used to like their soups- now, I won't be buying from them anymore.

Melissa

That commercial creeped me out, too. Thanks for so beautifully articulating why it's so disgusting. Maybe somebody on Madison Avenue will be listening.

jane

Although I agree with the entire sentiment in this post, I have to point out that the commercial has fine print at the end saying:

"as part of a balanced meal"

-so they are covering their asses, as it were.

Mb

I did a little research in preparation for writing to Campbell. The Light Select Harvest italian wedding flavor is on 50 calories! absurd.

Bridget Adams

Like many others here, I thought I was the only one thinking all this. Thanks for the post!

I saw this ad too and, as a man, was utterly repulsed at the message Campbell's was sending women. I also suspect (tho I have not looked) that there is more than one serving per can, so Campbell's is really recommending that women eat one half a can of nutritionally poor soup as a meal. Women everywhere should rebel. Go eat some (non-Campbell's) clam chowder. Or any chowder. Or a real meal.
