I think a move like that can really hurt them in the wallet- but like all things, they can "quietly" turn around and bring the old commercials and logos back again. Or maybe make their original fanbase feel better about themselves by say "fans, we heard you!". Either way, it's a crappy chance to make during a recession, and even GE should know better.

Maybe they're just trying to be "down" with the hip audience by going for the stupid name change, sort of like the Ed McMahon rap commercials...

Andrea

The funny thing is, they do actually have a good reason or a name change -- to get something they can trademark the heck out of. But in choosing to clad this in the language of "we're trying to expand our appeal" rather than "just a business thing, we're still the channel you love, carry on"... yeah, they've pretty well shot themselves in the foot.

Thanks for commenting, Ted. Nice to meet you. :)

You're right on. Genre fiction, especially SF and Fantasy, are huge right now. Whether it's on TV, in movies, or on the printed page, SF/F is hot and people want it.

Statements like the ones made in that article show not only that these suits are out of touch with their audience, they're out of touch with sales trends, too. Selling SF is, theoretically at least, what they DO. You'd think they'd be happy to at least ride the wave, if not help push it forward.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! My own are here: http://jramboz.wordpress.com/2009/03/16/to-the-syfy-channel-executives/
