a computer the size of an airplane you say? Heck, there was that one book by Douglas Adams which had a computer the size of a planet!

Strangely enough that seems, somehow, more plausible. Also, Adams wrote a bit more recently, so that may affect my impression, as you wisely suggest.

Hmm... I think Adams sounds more plausible because his name for his massive computer didn't imply the use of millions of miles of vacuum tubes...
